About the Artist
For thirty years Rick McComb has been capturing life where it happens and
holding it captive in timeless images of life. From the telling messages in the eyes of his subjects to the seamless beauty
of nature, his images tell the untold stories of poverty, privledge, hope and happiness through the
still beauty of his lens.
The artist began his training at Ball State University as a student of photo journalism
in the late '70s. He began his career in the newspaper industry then quickly transitioned to photography in the
education trade industry. He spent the majority of his career photographing children for the Kentucky Department of
Education´s publications. His work has been featured in national trade magazines for over two decades.
After his marriage to a professional dancer, he expanded his work to include set and scene design
that featured large scale projection photography and technical set and sound design for large scale theatre
productions. With the development of work within the theatre, he also began experimentation into the photographing of
dance, motion and performing arts promotional photography. His subjects have included such noteworthy
performers as members of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, The Ririe Woodbury Dance Company and the
American Dance Theatre as well as other professional American companies.
Over the past decade McComb´s work has been featured in the Christian
Science Monitor, The New York Times and numerous other national publications. He has been awarded
many top awards in photography and design in both Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky
markets as well as first place national awards for his work in government publications in the USA.
The artist created an exhibit that toured the state of Kentucky entitled
"Faces of Reform". Demonstrating the various photographs that had been featured throughout Kentucky
during the first ten years of Education Reform in Kentucky, the exhibit provides photographs dating
from 1990 to 2000. His work may also be found in current exhibits throughout the Kentucky History Museum
documenting the history of education in Kentucky.
Residing with his wife Jean, who now works as an author and writer, the McCombs enjoy
spending their time with their three children and three grandchildren in the beautiful
inner bluegrass region of Kentucky. They frequently travel the globe in search of the images
and stories that continue to captivate them and all who appreciate the stories that make up life
in word and image.
